RE: [RC] [RC] marquis supergrip - terry banisterP.S. If you are planning to trim your own horse, do get Pete Ramey's book as well, "Making Natural Hoof Care Work for You". He is a protege of Jamie Jackson and his book is mostly pictures of trimming hooves. His trim philosphy is geared toward getting the horse back to work after removing shoes. It requires a different trim strategy than the "Strasser" trim that was developed to rectify badly damaged feet. There is a very clear, point-by-point comparison of his trim philosophy with the Strasser-trim concept in the 1. website below. Also, you may already be familiar with these websites, but here are three that have the best pictures and information for barefoot trim: 1. www.barefoothorse.com 2. www.ironfreehoof.com 3. www.tribeequus.com - Tribe Equus has tested the Marquis Boot, and found that the closure system could be a problem on a proper barefoot trim with short toe and low heel because it tightens directly over the coronet band. The jury is still out with them. They endorse the Boa Boot and the Swiss Boot. I have used both, and the Swiss Boots are dependent on someone custom-fitting them with a heat gun. Then they also have a definite Left and Right and it limits their interchangeability should you lose/damage one. Most fitters modify them by slotting the toe (because the angle is a bit upright for a natural trim), cutting them down (they can rub the side of the pastern), changing the closure strap, etc. The Boa Boots have no Left or Right and the Gaiters function like the air bladders of the Marquis Boots. The Boa Boots are very durable, and in my opinion, the most user/horse friendly. Terry "May the Horse Be With You" From: Timothy Worden <ndrorydr@xxxxxxxxx> To: EnduranceNet RideCamp <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [RC] marquis supergrip Date: Tue, 5 Oct 2004 18:17:25 -0700 (PDT) Has anyone used the marquis supergrip boots in competition? I don't recall any discussion about them on this list. I've recently gotten the "barefoot" bug...cough cough...I know, there must be something wrong with me. Anyway, my new horse has had an over-reaching problem for a while....easy to get with a shortbacked long legged arabian. He's 100mile potential, but 50-75mile heels;) Most of what I've read about over-reaching is pulling shoes will often stop this...and it appears it has. So what the heck, I've gotten the Jamie Jackson natural hoof book, getting some good tools and I'm going to give it a try. So in the mean time, I'm using easy boots and saving up for a pair of Marquis boots. They look more sturdy and high performance than other boots on the market. Just curious if there's anyone else on the list who has used them extensively in 50-100miles events. Don't jump all over me or another huge debate about the barefoot thing, because I'm not convinced steel shoes are totally bad. I just want to invest in a good pair of hoof boots for protection. It's something I'm trying with one of my 4 horses.
