[RC] Off season diet changes - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Sharon Hahn sharon.hahn@xxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== Dixie, the answer to your question is - it depends. You want your horses to be eating what they need for the conditions they are living in. If you live where the weather is the same all year, this would mean that you stop feeding them so much if you stop riding them or limit their turnout. However, I live in Minnesota, where it is very cold in the winter. So even though I don't ride much in the winter, my horses need more energy (food) to stay warm. Also, in the winter, there is no grass in the pasture, so I need to give them more hay to make up for that. I generally feed my horses all they can eat hay, with a little bit of commercial pellet feed. In the winter, they eat more hay. If they start looking too fat or too skinny, I adjust the pellets. But generally they mainly eat hay, which is what horses are designed to run on, and they self-adjust according to what they need. Talk to your vet about what might be appropriate for the amount of exercise your horses receive and the conditions in your area. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
