RE: [RC] [RC] mounting/dismounting - standing still - Jennifer Fleet

I have a question about horses standing for mounting.

My gelding will stand still for mounting from the ground just fine, thanks to
the carrot trick that Julie mentioned (I actually got the idea from Sylvia
Beverly months ago and it works like a charm! He used to walk off constantly).

However, my problem is when I want him to sidle up to a mounting block and stay
parallel to it while I mount. When I lead him up beside it, he'll stand there,
but as soon as I step up on the block he immediately swings his butt away from
me to face me, looking for the carrot (I think that's what he's doing). He
never gets one until I am mounted and settled, so he hasn't gotten any reward
for the bad habit. And as I said, he stands still like a pefect gentleman when
I'm mounting from the ground from either side.

He used to stand at the block with no problem. This is a fairly new habit.
How do I get him to stop swinging his rear end away from me and stay parallel
until I get mounted?

This isn't a huge problem for me, since I mount from the ground with no
problem, but I'll lose points in CTR for it, plus there's the training and
respect issue. :)

Thanks,
Jennifer
