I've had two really bad accidents
and two scary horses. Re: the accidents 1) The horse was sort
of dumb and he thought that as long as I didn't say no, he could do what he
did. He took me so by surprise that I just didn't comprehend what he was
going to do. He ended up on top of me. After recovering from the
accident, I just didn't allow myself to get into a similar situation.
Eventually, I sold him for a backyard pet. I'm sure he was a great success
at that, as he was so cute. 2) Very (otherwise) reliable horse ran
into a hot yellowjackets' nest. Two broken ribs (mine). Never rode
that part of the trail again.....very bad memories of it and didn't need to go
there anyway. Still afraid of yellowjackets' nests and just hope I never
repeat a similar situation. If I'm fairly certain of a high likelihood of
encountering yellowjackets, I ride a different, less reactive, horse.
3) A few years ago, I bought a beautiful young horse, kept him for 15
months, and when I finally realized he was ruining my riding by making me
fearful, I called the breeder/seller and said I couldn't live with this
horse. I had given him a good try. The breeder/seller was kind
enough and honest enough to refund my money. This was a horse that would,
in a split-second, jump 12' sideways off a trail. Realizing that if he
decided to do this on several of our trails, it would be 12' sideways and 100'
vertical. Now THAT scared me. I had a QH once that could not
climb moderate hills, but lunged up all hills. I think he had a bad back
and was in pain. I finally dumped him and got a nice horse that restored
my confidence.
I think the answer is, get rid of a
dangerous horse and get one that is kind, reliable, and safe.
Has anyone ever had a couple of bad experiences or accidents
and developed fear to the point where it really interfered with your riding?
If so what things worked for you to get back in the game? Thanks
