Re: [RC] confirmation - heidiAnother great book is Conformation and Performance by Dr. Nancy Loving. It has lots of pictures of examples of good and poor confirmation. She also describes in layman's terms how such conformation would or would not effect performance. It is just one book that you can take out to the barn and examine your own horses and compare. Or when looking at future endurance prospects. Nancy's book is a good starter book to get one acquainted with terminology and what parts of the horse to look at, but the thing I really like about Deb Bennett's stuff is how she gets into the physics and the WHYs of conformation. Nancy tends to approach things from a viewpoint of "this conformation is for this kind of work and that kind of conformation for that kind of work" whereas Deb approaches it from the viewpoint of "this is a balanced horse and an ideal, and you might be able to get away with a deviation from the ideal in this direction for this or in that direction for that." The laws of physics remain the same whether the horse is racing down a track, going over a jump, cutting a cow, or climbing Cougar Rock. But in each activity, there are flaws for which one can compensate easier than others, and those flaws vary from activity to activity. By explaining the WHY of things, Deb manages to get that concept across.
