        I also think that if it is raining (not the case at Stephs' ride, 
I imagine!), they get kinda 'depressed' and don't eat or drink as well the 
night before, and so start a little behind the curve.
        I believe this is what happened at the Manitoba PAC a few years 
ago; thunderstorm with rain and cold the night before the ride; far more 
than anticipated metabolic problems the next day.
