Re: [RC] Insurance Rant - Maryanne Stroud GabbaniAs always, Kat, you cut an argument like a scalpel. I have to admit that you are right about the process. But something has happened in the larger machine such that the presence of liability insurance has become a large "Sue Me" sign to people who all too often wander into situations without engaging their brains. Where you would prune the larger machine (to utterly mangle a metaphor) to allow sanity to re-emerge is the problem.Meanwhile, I'll go back to my cartwheels and dancing. On my way into the city the other day I saw a procession of 5 trucks, dump trucks and (roughly) 2 ton hauling trucks filled with furniture and crowds of young men and women from the countryside singing, clapping, dancing, beating drums of new buckets, and generally carrying on in a manner that would drive any highway patrolman totally bonkers. I was behind them as they passed through a police checkpoint without a word other than "Mabrouk (Congratulations)" for the wedding. Absolutely they were behaving like idiots. Definitely one of them could have gotten killed. But they weren't driving fast or endangering other traffic, and in fact were bringing smiles to most of the rest of us who were facing much less laughter in our upcoming day. If someone of them were hurt in the procession, would there be a lawsuit? No way. The family would be very unhappy and at the same time admit that the person had acted in a way that courted disaster. Much better to my way of thinking. Most people around here don't even have insurance, and if my car gets bumped by a farm truck I don't get into a hassle, I just fix it. (Thank heaven body work is cheap...and it's cheap because a lot of people are doing it without being able to charge an insurance company big bucks.) What are they going to give me? 1100 lbs of cabbage? No thank you. Welcome in Egypt.
