[RC] Over population of crappy horses ~ whose fault? - Marv Walker> That's a nice line, but it is the irresponsibility of the folks Actually, it is the collective fault of both mare owners and stallion owners. As a clinician I see a lot of horses of both sexes that should not be bred. I find that many of the problems brought to me are the direct result of, or aggravated by, poor breeding. One particular horse had a problem going into one of the breed's gaits. I pointed to a VERY OBVIOUS sacroiliac strain and suggested that might be the problem. The owner flipped her hand in the air and replied, "Oh, that's just the Cordoloopo line thing, he has it and so do all of his get." I see it all the time; downhill, ewe necked, sway backed, angle-legged, oh, you name it. On both sides. When I say, "This horse's withers prevent it from being ridden the way you want because they make the saddle fall behind its center of gravity. Your weight will always interfere with the horse by causing you to ride behind the horse. It is always out of balance which makes it undependable." The response is almost always, "Well, she's happier producing babies anyway." Why breed a horse you don't like, can't ride, can't handle, can't whatever with? Why breed to one who cannot stand scrutiny? I'm running an online interactive Intensive Horse Training Course and this is going to be one of our most dwelt on subjects. We're going to doing a lot of conformation work and examining how conformation discrepancies affect the horse's abilities to efficiently perform. Marv "Show your political support!
