Re: [RC] truck stops vs rest stops - heidiI find those who drive horse trailers with horses in them doing at 70mph or more a danger, especially to the horses. There again, it depends on the circumstances. When driving heavy freeway traffic where the "flow" is going over 70 mph, you may actually INCREASE the risk of an accident (and hence damage to your horses) by going appreciably slower than the flow. Here in the "wide open spaces" 70-ish is about the norm, and when road conditions are less than ideal, the speed drops considerably. But you'd better believe that when I get on a freeway, I'm gonna do what the truckers do, so I don't disrupt the flow of traffic. Here, where it is all 2-lane, you don't want to go so slow that folks feel pushed to pass you in spaces not safe for passing, and risking a head-on. Speed limit is 65, and it is common knowledge that the local law enforcement allows about a 10 mph "margin" before they ticket folks, so you guessed it--the average speed is about 74... Just made a trip to Denver recently (without horses, for once!) and drove I-80 across southern Wyoming--the truckers were averaging about 78-79 mph. That's been my experience hauling that route frequently with a trailer as well. Traffic isn't TOO bad there, so one can get away with going a bit slower without causing too much of a ripple. I-5 north of Sacramento can be a whole nother story--if it is busy and going 75, IMO it pays to just suck up and go 75, as there often just isn't much room for a "ripple."
