Re: [RC] Elevator rides - heidiI am specifically interested in why completion only is allowed for the horse/person who elects to elevate. NOTE: I do not have a position as to whether the rule is good, bad or whatever. Two reasons, Ed. One being the time differential--if one is competing for placings, one can't compete against someone whose clock started an hour later. (Glad to get back to the rules and clear THAT one up...) The second reason is that in all fairness, a rider should know when he starts the ride who his competitors are. This wasn't too much of an issue in the "old days" when on an elevator, everyone entered the shorter distance and then some chose to go on--obviously, those who chose to go on ahead of you are your competition, so to speak. But this is not workable in a situation where folks are riding for 100-mile placings, and who need to guage their ride to who else is riding the same distance from the beginning. If someone elevates out of the field of 75s at the last minute, you might have ridden your ride differently from the gitgo had you known they were a part of the field. By limiting the elevating riders to completion only, even if they are added to the 100-mile race at the 75-mile point, those who entered the 100 to start with only have to "compete" against those who did likewise, and can plan their races accordingly.
