[RC] Injecting Hocks - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

Ray, I would not inject unless you know what joint or where there is a problem.
Too much injecting can also damage the joints. I still am the believer if it
isn't broke don't fix it. BUT I am not against prevention. Try the MD's
Choice, I think Truman can recommend us on this. It seems to be the best out
there for joint rebuilding, I am just now starting my old horse on it. Also
Adequan. I would also look into Chiro, & keep trying to find a vet to help you
find the problem. The horse has to be sore someplace. Since my horses' hock
was only slightly changed I feel he must also have arthritis in other joints
that you can't inject so I am looking to the suppliments to help here. I am
also hoping I will not have to have the hock injected again. I do not want to
invade the joint unless necessary. This is not an easy process, you need a vet
who has done this procedure many times & knows what he is doing. There is
always the chance of infection in the joint. I got many different prices from
75 dollars, 150 dollars to 400 dollars. Most vets feel you should do the
injection & Adequan. When they inject the hock there are 4 joints so they
recommend that you do all 4. Most horses are severly lame if it is the upper
joints but fortunatly most of the problems are in the lower joints but it is
better I believe to have both upper & lower done then if there is a problem
developing in the other joints you will only have the procedure done the one
time. Of course my vet suggested I do both hocks, but I didn't have the funds,
I knew where the problem was if there wasn't improvement in his gait I would
know it was the other hock & come back. I spent $150.00 to have 1 hock
injected upper & lower, the Adequan cost $210.00. Some vets say you may have to
do it again in 6 months or at best every year, I think the suppliments should
improve the odds here. I'll let you know in about 4 to 5 weeks how the
suppliment is working. My horse is still working & competing but the days of
doing 50 miles of nothing but up & down is out. We will have to pick & choose
which rides & how many miles to go.

Good luck,
Tess
