Re: [RC] Feeding Colt - Thanks - Barbara McCraryWe have raised 6 foals in the past. After each was weaned, we turned him or her out with the one that was a year older, and the one that was two years older, etc. All but two were all out of the same mare, and those two were brothers from another mare. They grew up on acreage where they went into the woods to browse, had to travel to the other end of a long field to get water, and come straight up the face of a steep hill when I called them. These were very well adjusted and conditioned colts by the time they were ready to send out for training. They had nothing but natural pasture, plus supplement of hay during the winter and whenever the feed became short. Even if the "space" is flat, just having ROOM to move around and other horses for socialization does wonders for younguns! Having young horses in small paddocks is a real impediment to good development.
