Re: [RC] Feeding Colt - Rae CallawayI've raised quite a few foals in dry lot conditions. For their first year, I give them from 1/2 lb to 3/4 lb of a JR feed and 2-3 flakes of hay per feeding. Basic rule of thumb here is twice as much hay as the adults get and 1/3 as much feed. Like Heidi says - you want to stimulate the hind gut. I also think that its a good way to teach a horse the joys of munching on hay all day long. Some of the horses I've had started in a grain heavy situation and they're really picky about their hay now as adults. I would appreciate feeding recommendations to help maximize his growth and health.Well, generally speaking the way to feed to maximize his health would be to not try to maximize his growth. One of the biggest long-term health problems facing young horses is growing too big too fast. Probably all he might need in addition to a good grass hay forage (and timothy is a pretty good grass hay) would be a vitamin/mineral supplement especially formulated for young horses, but you may want to have an analysis done of the hay (depending on where it was grown, its mineral content can vary) to find out just what micronutrient gaps might need to be filled in. kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
