In my case, when I got my first horse I had wanted to get into show jumping. Got waylaid by an Arab soulmate who wasn't at all suitable for jumping. Changed to trail riding, which was what he was suitable for, and never looked back. Probably my next horse will need to be suitable for endurance, but I think you have to keep your priorities in mind and understand about square pegs in round holes.
