[RC] circulation - k s swigartCandace said: When a horse's foot is dissected you can see the damage to the coffin bone from the lack of circulation. Parts of the bone do die off from inadequate circulation. While it may be true that it is possible to see damage to a coffin bone when disecting the hoof of a dead horse, it is just a guess to suppose that that damage is the result of lack of circulation. And it is pure speculation to suppose that if there were some way to determine that the damage is the result of lack of circulation, that the lack of circulation was caused by steel shoes. IF this coffin bone damage is noticed only in domesticated horses and not their feral counterparts (which I don't know if this is the case), there are still a multitude of variables that could explain this difference other than the fact that domesticated horses are more often shod than feral horses are. I have neither seen nor heard of any studies that have actually performed any real measurements with respect to differences in the expansion of a shod hoof over a bare hoof. All I have ever seen is that there is greater heat in a bare hoof than a shod one. Whether this greater heat is to be described as greater circulation of more inflamation is open to debate. :) My own experience is that that greater heat can usually be described as excessive heat, in which case it would be inflamtion...not something that I usually want to strive for personally. kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
