Re: [RC] Big South Fork - rides2farWe're going...we're going!!!!!! Went last year for the first time, yes, lots of big, long climbs...and CHIGGERS in camp. I'll be there, and yes, take chiggers seriously! I spray my feet & shoes before I get out of the truck and have had no problems. I put a lot of Wipe on the horses before we load up and no problems. I've done this ride almost every year they've had it. Never had pads unless they just happened to be on for some other reason. I've had 2 horses win BC there (mine once, daughter's once) and neither wore pads. The rocks there are more the kind that'll trip you than cause a stone bruise. They're bigger, and stuck in the ground so they don't move when you hit them. The gravel the BSF people put out is horse friendly. This is one of the only places you'll ever go where horses seem to have number one priority! :-)) The drive in past all the horse property & bed & breakfasts is worth the trip. The only real worry on climbs you have is going down into the gorge & back up. It's a deep gorge and a long steep climb but if you don't rush'em there they'll have plenty left for the rest of the trail. The last few years they've had an away check, and then a long loop of about 23? miles so you don't see camp till about the 40 mi. mark if you left something there. :-P There's a very nice campground a couple of hundred yards down the road from camp and nice showers. *Seems* like I remember needing a waterhose to hook to their hydrant there. I'll throw one in if I don't bring my tank. Hey Eric...if you're reading this...is there an away check again? (dreading not having a crew).
