RE: [RC] [RC] Can a horse drown in a two feet deep river - Catfish DanielsGood point about the tie-down, if that's what the horse had on while being in the river. Gosh, one can't think of enough precautionary things. But, my opinion is very different about tie-downs not being for trail horses. My one 9 year old gelding has never ever had a bit in his mouth before - doesn't know what it is, doesn't want anything to do with it. I've had him since he was 2. When he travels down the trail, you'd think you're watching a drassage show - talking about carrying himself correct, collected and all. Gets lots of compliments from other riders and vets, and he only rides with an S-Hack. At first when he was young, and when he'd get excited, his head was a mile high. hollow back, throwing his head - you name it. So I did a tie-down, and it tought him to move correctly. He hasn't worn a tie-down in about four years. Now, my other gelding came off the Arabian race track. When I go riding with him and other horses are around, I don't have the strength to hold him back. I am 32 years old and in great shape - but this horse puts his head into that bit and you better hope and pray he picks his trail wisely. So I tried an arabian hackamore - and wouldn't you know it - it was something new to him and I can ride and control him nearly with one hand, even when other horses are around. But, he had no idea how to carry himself correctly, and when he wanted his way, his head would go a mile high, throwing it, etc. So again, I use a tie-down - and he is learning remarkably. After a few months now, I rode him recently in a training ride with other horses - and we took the tie-down off. Yep, he had learned his lessons well and did me proud. A tie-down can be a great training aid if used correctly, specially if you have an end result in mind that you're trying to achieve by using that tool.
