Re: [RC] Drugs/Allergies/Rules - heidiPlease Reply to: Jeanne Pepper pepperja@xxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================Just occurred to me that this horse of mine (who's my future endurance partner)may need antihistamines or allergy shots(or oral doses)throughout the entire riding season in order to be trained comfortably..as the sweet itch problem on him leaves his belly & girth area raw.Does this mean he won't be allowed to compete because he'll be on medication? This is still hypothetical since I haven't even been on him yet but I wonder about future concequences of having a chronic allergy. With all the responces to this thread there must be at least a few folks out there riding horses with allergies on medications???or how do they deal with this and rules of AERC?pepper I rode a mare several years ago who had bouts of COPD due to allergies. Medication to control it is not legal in competition, and I managed to get through with her by very stringent management of her feed, so that there was NO dust or any hint of mold at any time. It didn't take much to set her off. You are right that horses are not allowed to compete on medication, even for something like allergies. With luck, you might be able to get your horse's allergies under control with the allergy shots and with nutritional management. If you get him to the point that he can compete drug-free, great. But if not, then at the risk of sounding harsh, you have to ask yourself if he is really meant to do this. As an allergy sufferer myself, I can vouch for the fact that it is NOT pleasant to have to function under the influence of either allergies or antihistamines. It sure isn't something that I'd want to ask my horse to do, since he is not a "volunteer"...
