There are a lot of doping agents out there. Mostly thanks to human
track and the money in that sport today. Some have found their way into
cycling - recall the scandals at the Tour de France a few years ago.
There is still a shadow over Lance Armstrong based on the latest book
published on the Tour.
Many of these are not detectable in any sort of drug test. Some impact
the ability of the red blood cells to carry O2 hence raising the
anaerobic threshold. The compound that seems poised to impact the
endurance sports (and strength sports as well) is a compound that
triggers to body to grow new muscle mass through a genetic trigger.
Once the tirgger is set it stays set for a considerable period of time
so there is little need to reuse the durg. It's now in testing for
treating muscle degeneration. It's a whole now type of drug - one that
cannot be detected because once the trigger is set the body takes care
of the rest.
Have any of these found their way into endurance - maybe yes maybe no,
but if endurance makes the Olympics I suspect it will be "Katie bar the
door."
I forgot to mention that Jeannie said the term for this practice is
'Super Hydration' and i would wonder what else is added in this IV drip.
Such things as reconstituted Red Blood Cells taken from the horse
previously and put back in before a race like some Olympic Runners do,
and who knows what else in this witches brew. Personally, i'll stay with
hay, grain, forage, water and training.
Red blood cell "doping" as done in humans is another practice that simply
isn't applicable to horses. Healthy horses have a HUGE RBC reserve in
their spleens, and when extras are needed, they just dump them into
circulation themselves.
