RE: [RC] [RC] reply to Bob Morris - heidi

If a holistic compound is okay (not a drug) as long as you are not
treating a "disease", how about giving every horse a dose of bute
BEFORE they're lame. I'm not treating an existing lameness, I'm just
promoting continued soundness, so that's okay, right?
There is no way to make this rule any more clear, someone will always
have a "yeah, but".

Nancy, a chiropractor who treated me several years ago brought me up short
when he said, "Heidi, you DON'T have an aspirin deficiency!" His point
underscored the difference between a drug and a foodstuff, as the
differentiation is made in the AERC rule.

If my diet should normally include bute, then giving some would be
addressing a deficiency. But my diet need not normally contain bute. If
my diet should normally include selenium, but it does not, then giving
selenium IS addressing a deficiency.

So my question regarding the herbal remedies is this--must the diet of a
normal horse include this specific substance? If the answer is no, then
the substance is a violation of the AERC drug rule. If the answer is yes,
then amounts needed to bring the diet up to needed levels are allowed--but
amounts in excess of that are not.

How much more simple does it need to be?

Heidi
