Re: [RC] Tevis - Strategy for vet checks - Kristen A FisherCould you get through P&R and get your P&R time, and then let your horse eat before you go through the vet check? Say you had an hour hold that starts when you go through P&R. Could you let the horse eat for 20 mins and still have 40 mins to vet through? Your card would still reflect when you had P&R'ed so your out time should be the same. Of course, if the line gets longer and you don't vet through in 40 mins, you have to be prepared to leave after what your out time should have been. Or am I missing something? I can see going straight to the vet line if it is a long line, but can't you usually have a bucket of food/hay in line if you are waiting to vet through? My usual strategy is to P&R as fast as possible then let my horse eat and drink for as long as possible before vetting through and getting ready to head out again. I didn't realize that once I P&R'd I'd have to go to the vet straight away and at the time I was there, I couldn't bring food or water in with me. My horse got a C+ on gut sounds and a 44/40 CRI. When I came back through for a re-check, he had the chance to eat and drink and his gut sounds were a B+ but his pulse was moving between 52 and 60, so we were pulled. Is it still the best idea to P&R as soon as your horse drops or should I have let him eat and drink for 10-20 minutes before going to the P&R and vet? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
