Never dealt with an abcess myself, but can't you telephone your vet?  I call my 
vets all the time with questions (and they don't charge for phone calls). 
Usually I explain the situation and if they think the horse should be seen, 
they say so and I make an appointment.  Otherwise they just answer my questions 
and are happy I called instead of ignoring the problem until my horse is dying 
and then expecting them to do something about it.
