[RC] Spooky Horses - Nancy Sturm

Chris makes a really good point!

We have a grade gelding with a 28 RHR - he's almost not breathing he's so
quiet.

One of our daughters, who has not ridden since childhood, wants to begin
endurance riding and I asked her to start with Dusty, do all the hard
trails, learn about tack and conditioning etc. on him because he's so safe.

She went out with another rider and something truly scarey must have
happened because both quiet horses did 180's and Abby went off. She rode
Dusty two more times and complained eash time that he was spooky, so I took
him out and, by golly, he was. I think he was just convinced that suddenly
the world had become less safe for short bay geldings.

I'm sure that with a few more rides where nothing jumps out of the bushes to
eat him, Dusty will again be bombproof.

And just to balance - that I ride a nice Arab gelding who is convinced
squirrels are killers and my calm approach has not convinced him that they
are not. One day I sort of said "sheesh" and he about jumped out of his
skin.
