Re: [RC] Completion Awards - Barbara McCraryThere is nothing wrong with giving shirts to volunteers; it's done frequently. The point I, and others, are trying to make is riders should not be given a "participation award" before they even start the ride. A person in competition should earn an award, not just be given one before he starts. I'm tired of this discussion.....there are differing opinions, and no one is going to convince the other. I volunteered at a ride for the first time to get some more hands-on experience with endurance rides before I actually compete. They gave me a shirt (they gave t-shirts to everyone, including volunteers, so it wasn't a "completion" award) that I wear alot. But I guess people that see me wearing it who didn't go to that particular ride might assume I completed the ride. So maybe next time I wear it I should first take a permanent marker and write on the back of it(I'll have more room that way): "I didn't win this ride, I didn't complete this ride, I didn't even RIDE this ride...I just enjoyed it." I told her outright that she didn't have any right to be wearing that shirt because she had not earned it. That is honestly how I feel. It is just my opinion that the mentality of giving a ride shirt (bag, sponge, mug, etc. . .) to anyone who shows up only adds to the ever-growing mentality of some riders that the ride owes you something other than a place to come and enjoy the sport.
