Re: [RC] spooking spinning - Barbara McCraryAfter giving last Saturday's incident some careful thought, I am convinced that my horse was planning his spooks to get back at me for my handling of him. We had done a lot of really hard climbing, and this horse asks to stop periodically to take a breather. I let him do it for awhile and then my husband told me I shouldn't do that, because I was letting the horse make a habit of stopping. So I kept pushing the horse up steep hills, and I'm absolutely convinced that his spooking, which got worse and worse as the ride went on, was a "I'm going to get back at you for that" trick. Once, about a year ago I smacked him on the rump (with the saddle strings) for refusing to face a gate in the direction I wanted him to. He humped his back and kicked up his hind feet because of that. Then I realized that the reason he wouldn't face in the direction I wanted was the horse my riding partner was on was BEHIND him where he couldn't "protect" himself in case of attack. When I asked her to ride her horse around in front of mine, he willingly faced the gate as I asked. Smart horse..... So I think he dumped me as a way of getting back at me for pushing him up the mountain harder than he was willing to go. We were only walking, but I was demanding a brisk walk with no rest stops, and he was telling me he wanted, and perhaps needed, a breather. Different approach here I suppose, had em, sold 'em. Just not the personality I am interested in.
