Re: [RC] falling safely - Bette LamoreWhen I was first learning to ride, I was at a riding academy (not having a horse of my own then and living in the Chicago suburbs). We spent several lessons doing the "tuck and roll" off of our horses. I guess the good news is that all that training has paid off MANY times as it was my instinctual response whenever my horse has provoked an "involuntary dismount" or when I have bailed of my own volition--- HOWEVER.. as they say..."When you are up to your "arse" in alligators, it is sometimes difficult to remember that your original objective was to drain the swamp!" I should add, though, that my daughter refused to learn this lesson (I apparently did not instill the fear in her that the gestapo riding instructors instilled in me) and she has thus far broken a wrist and 2 ankles. My only broken bones from riding occurred when I DIDN'T choose to tuck and roll right away and stayed with the horse through his bucking frenzy (due to a client's saddle not fitting correctly-- she insisted it was the correct fit! Thank God I got on him first) and I wound up walking like a hooker after a hard night ;-) I later found out I had broken my pelvis in 2 places from the impacts!! What I want to know is--- HOW THE HECK DO COWBOYS RIDE THOSE BRONCOS ???!!! I would think that they all would sound like the Viennese Boys choir after sustaining their impacts! Bette, who has no need to ride out the bucks EVER again!
