Re: [RC] forages - Bette Lamore

Thank you Nicole--- now I have the correct terminology instead of Central CA slang and I do appreciate the lesson :-) AND I still would like an answer to my question as to whether or not I would have to supplement to get the needed calcium for my foals and lactating mares given that they are being fed my particular mix of forage (oat, wheat and beardless barley--- very rich in grain)? Anyone?
Where is Susan when I need her???
Bette
PS Our forage mix as I've described is currently anywhere from $13 -15/bale (although I got a deal since my neighbor grew it) and alfalfa is $8-9/bale last I checked. And why are we living in CA???

I guess you missed the body of my post-- we call alfalfa "alfalfa"
in these parts and forage denotes wheat, beardless barley and 2 kinds of oat in this case (sometimes forage also included vetch which I love-- but not this time) so I am asking my question based
on this content of feed--- not a grass pasture, which is VERY
different in these parts.

Technically, "forage" is food for domestic animals. However, it's
most common use for horses & livestock is to refer to hays and pastures containing grasses and legumes.

Oat, wheat, barley, bermuda, orchard, timothy, and many others are grasses. I realize most people don't say "grass hay" when
refering to oat/wheat/barley type hays, but they are grass hays.

Alfalfa does tend to be called "alfalfa" and held distinct. Alfalfa
is a legume. Other legumes are clover and I believe vetch as well. Legumes and grasses tend to be quite different in chemical content due to the different ways the plants take
nutrients from the soil.

All that said, I'm extremely jealous of anyone with really really
nice oat/wheat/barley. Also of anyone who can get Timothy at
a price that doesn't break the bank.

Just a bit of trivia. :)
