I got some Duratech ones from Schneiders that I
like pretty well. They are filled with crystals that when soaked turn into a gel
and hold the cold. They are not ICE cold, but you don't need a freezer for them
either ;-)
The trick to them is getting them wet enough on
site so now I dunk them in the horses water tub to wet them, THEN put them in
the ice water in the cooler to get them cold. After you get home, make sure to rinse them and lay flat as it can take a
week for the gel to revert back to crystals [when it does you can even out the
distribution of the crystals again].
Also, a recent edition of Horse Journal had an
article about the best ice boots too if you can get ahold of that [I can fax it
to you when I am back from vacation - email me privately].
1. I decided
I wasn't totally happy with our ice boots. We have 2 different brands
with inserts that we freeze. One isn't so bad and has had other good
uses, but one I didn't like at all. I saw someone with some boots that
she soaked in ice water and then they were nice and wet and flexible to put on
the horse. She didn't know the brand since she'd bought them used and
there were no markings, so what ice boots of this type are out there (pros and
cons) and who sells them?
