Re: [RC] Mule saddles, Ed - Ed & Wendy Hauser

"...Ed, its "britch'n" about every where I have been in my 66 plus years no
matter how "Webster" wants us to spell it..."

Oh, our wonderful English language! If you are in the Midwest and learning
how to harness a draft horse it is commonly called a "breeching" or even
"breeching strap". I assume that if you were harnessing a carriage horse in
VA or England the same thing would hold.

In the west mules do use a "britch'n" or spelling variation. When I first
started to learn about horses I was confused between "Girth" and "chinch" or
"chincha". Another good one is that packers bundle up their stuff in a
"mantie" or a "mantee". Now in Florida a Manatee is an endangered water
creature, but in MT it is a small tarp. I finally traced that one down. In
Spanish a blanket, shawl, or tarp is a "Mantilla". Apparently that word was
corrupted to "mantie".
