I can't recommend more highly one step that a newbie can and should take 
before entering any endurance ride:  Volunteer to work a ride, preferably a 
ride you plan on doing in the future.  You will know how an endurance ride 
works so much better than just by asking questions.  In fact, I recommend 
that every endurance rider volunteer at rides they don't plan on doing - no 
only do ride managers appreciate the help, but there is always something 
new to learn.
