[RC] Forerunner 201 - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: April pmacedir@xxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== This really is a great unit. Some little problems with it, but overall, I love mine and use it for every training ride. Last time I checked, Amazon.com had the best price and you might as well help out Steph in the process! :-) Ok, I just reread that. I know people are going to ask about the little problems, so here we go: 1. In heavy tree cover, you need to use an external antenna to get the best accuracy. Can be had from http://www.pc-mobile.net/gpsant.htm (even then, yes, you can still have lousy reception if you're in a cave) 2. I love to map out trails and to do that properly, you need a unit that will hold lots of trackpoints (bread crumbs of where you've been). The Forerunner only has 3000. I like 10,000 for trail mapping (well, would like more, but can't find any higher), so use another unit (currently the Garmin GPS 60CS...my husband's) when mapping trails I've never been on before. But the Forerunner is perfect for sub-4 hour rides. If you're not mapping trails, not a big deal. 3. The Forerunner LogBook software that comes free with the unit is horrible. Well, at least to me it is. I still kinda sorta use it, but I mostly use TopoFusion (http://www.topofusion.com/) now. I also use Mapsource, but that's because I got that "free" with other GPS units we have bought. But the pros SO outweigh the cons and point 1 is true of any GPS unit, point 2 is only for, um, obsessed people that like to pore over data, and point 3 is a personal opinion/choice. As for Laura T's gelding, he definitely can trot 14 mph. My poor Tanna had to canter to keep up with him. Tanna can squeak out a 11.5-12 mph trot, but I don't like him to do it for the same reason Laura doesn't like her gelding to do his 14 mph trot.
