Re: [RC] Dura-Track shoe nails - Ed & Wendy Hauser
I have never used them, but I have seen them
in a farrier catalog. They are shaped like regular horseshoe nails,
but have carbide heads. The carbide heads should not wear and thus always
protrude below the shoe. Since nail heads are not as
sharp or long as normal screw in studs, they should not provide as much traction
as the studs. How the traction would compare to the finest grades of
Borium I also do not know. The instructions in the catalog warned
the farrier that they would mess up his hammer, so he should get a hammer that
he only used with these nails. Perhaps, 4 per shoe would provide a noticeable
increase in traction without messing things up completely.
They might be worth a try.
I don't think they would solve the general shoe
wear that I experience with Ranger. I'm quite sure he would still slide
and grind the shoe away until the nails protruded enough to change his foot
timing. Then he would remove the shoes.
