Re: [RC] McGyver Moves on the trail - heidiWhat inventive solutions have others come up with for emergencies while away from home? I've seen quite a bunch, as both a ride vet and as a clinician. Had a client horse suffer a similar injury to what you described, only much deeper (hit an artery deeper in, and was spurting blood in an arc about as high as my head) while he was WAAAAY out in the toolies riding for cattle. He made a very effective pressure wrap out of his longjohns top, led the horse an hour to his stock truck, drove another hour and a half to the clinic, and when we "uncorked" the thing, it immediately started shooting blood again. But at least in the clinic, we could put in a dollop of local anesthetic and then go in with a hemostat and grap the end of the offending little artery and tie it off... But the best one I've seen come into a vet check was another similar injury which came merrily into the vet check with the rider's bra holding it in check... :-) Heidi ============================================================ The whole ride experience can be very hard, and at times you question why you put yourself through such abuse. But then you remember all those moments when you pop up over a hill and are suddenly surrounded by the most stunning views. It's just you and your horse and for a moment time stops and you can hear the angels sing. Therein lies the addiction, at least for me. ~ Leslie Beyers ridecamp.net information: http://www.endurance.net/ridecamp/ ============================================================
