[RC] Walk - Nancy Sturm

I have recently had remarkable success improving the walk with exactly the
technique Heidi describes. I've been riding for a really long time and I
can't remember who taught me when to "bump" a horse to get extension at the
walk, but it usually works.

I have a 14+ hand welsh cob cross that had only been driven when I bought
him. When I decided that if I were going to ever try endurance I'd better
get started (I'm 62), he was what I had available. I think because of the
harness and shafts, he was not particularly responsive to legs and because
he had only been worked on level ground, climbing did not appeal to him. He
does have a RHR of 28 (heart monitor swears this is correct).

I've just bought a nice Arab gelding, but before Dusty got turned out, he
could walk with long flat strides, cover lots of ground and climb anythig I
pointed him at. It works.
