Re: [RC] re: posting/balance from rc guest - Maggie MieskeI truly believe a "routine" like that signals the horse's body that it's "time" to relax. I get off, loosen the cinch, Nelson removes the bit and gives him an apple and 9 times out of 10, his pulse is down by the time we present. Kind of like Pavlov's conditioning. And for us, the apple (or carrot or mouthful of grass if the other two aren't available for whatever reason ie., Nelson FORGOT) is crucial as you can dramatically hear the beats fall off as he munches. (Through the stethoscope, of course!). Oh and the strategy for the knee is another good reason! :) Miles of smiles, Maggie http://arabianquest.com/samaha_arabians.htm "So many of our dreams seem impossible, then improbable, then inevitable." It signals to him that's it's time to mellow out and helps his HR drop faster (although it drops fast anyhow), but perhaps more importantly, it helps my bad left knee loosen up enough that I can trot him out. I'm usually hobbling pretty bad when I first get off, but by the time I walk that last little ways into the vet check, I can move pretty well.
