Re: [RC] [RC] Susan's extra day at convention? - Susan Garlinghouse, DVMBefore I answer Howard's ulcer question, lemme answer one other questions I received privately from a bunch of folks about convention. The question was were there going to be tapes or something made of the lectures and the answer is yes, the media committee is planning to tape the talks (at least mine, I don't know about any others) and will then put them into some sort of transcript or article to put in EN and/or the AERC website in some form. I'd like to ask you a question about Ulcers. Is there a method of preventing them? Can an owner safely give their horses something similar to Gastro guard (the cheaper stuff), while competing, with the goal being ulcers become one less thing to worry about? I don't think we know enough about ulcers in endurance horses to know everything there is about how to prevent them, short of putting the horse in pasture and leaving him there for the rest of his life. We do know that stress, exercise, high concentrate rations (and I mean grain), parasites and long periods without eating all contribute. Lots of other factors, like electrolyte concentrations in the stomach, can further irritate an existing ulcer, but not electrolyting may have significant consequences as well, depending on the horse and conditions. To what extent everything contributes, we just don't know. Undoubtedly, it's probably individual to each horse to a large extent based on how they react to given stressors. I think some things are pretty consistent---ie, high grain rations are a risk factor, period, and I don't care who is trying to tell you 20 lbs of grain a day is fine. Long periods without eating is a risk factor, period---we just don't know how long is too long, because different types of feeds all leave the stomach at different rates. IMO, that's a critical question that still needs to be fully answered. Can the generic version of Gastroguard be used to prevent and heal ulcers---IMO, anything is better than nothing if you can't swing the cost for the real thing. However, there is a valid study, reasonably independent, that demonstrated the cheap stuff isn't as effective as the Gastroguard. As far as I know, benefits from the practice of feeding aloe juice is fairly anecdotal, but might still be worthwhile if you knew your horse had ulcers and you personally saw some improvement in clinical signs. Anyway, I don't think there are simple answers at this point. Minimizing the risk factors is a big start in the right direction. I have to do some time rummaging around the literature before convention, I'll let you know what I find. Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2004 21:50:04 -0700Hi, There was some talk of Susan Garlinghouse perhaps doing a full day oftalksthe day before the AERC convention. Anyone know if that's happeningthisyear?Sorry to be late answering this. There are plans in the works to do an all-day nutrition and physiology seminar associated with the convention, but it will probably happen in '05. We're pursuing corporate sponsorship so that the costs to AERC members is minimal, or even better, nonexistent. I will still be doing "regular" talks at convention this year on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, I'll be talking about nutrition solutions for performance problems like tying up, chronic colickiness, ulcers, thumps, that sort of thing. On Saturday, I'm going to do a talk on BASIC nutrition without all the fancy shmancy stuff. Just the basic guideline type things and why things work the way they do. For those going to the NATRC convention same weekend, same place, I'll be talking to the CTR group as well, dunno the exact topic yet (other than nutrition and physiology). And, for those going to the PNER convention later this month, I'll be there, too. Talking on both Friday and Saturday, I think. Hope to see y'all at one place or another. :-)) Susan G =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
