I only used a crupper for a few times on one horse I had. The way I got him used to it was by lunging him with his saddle and crupper on. He is very obedient on the lunge line and will "walk", "trot" and "canter" on command and reverse on command. When he went into the canter, he did a little bucking and crow-hopping, but then he settled down. I only rode him with the crupper when I could see that he was now comfortable on the lunge line with the crupper on. The few times I did use the crupper, I always lunged him for a minute or two before I mounted up... just in case he needed a refresher lesson.
