Re: [RC] Purina's New high performance horse feed - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVMRight, and isn't 7% about a good protein level for an adult horse? Gosh, hard to find hay that low...last thing I want to feed is high-protein feed. Karen I'm fine with an overall protein level of 10-12% and 7% might be just a hair low. As for an individual feed being 12% (or 14 or 18%)---remember, it's not the percentage of the individual feed, it's the protein percentage of the total ration. For example, if your hay were 6%, then you'd need to add in a protein supplement. If you fed a 10% grain mix, you'd have to feed a lot to make up the protein deficiency. Or, you could probably feed just a pound or so of a higher protein feed---14 or 18 or even higher) and make up the deficit with a small amount, and the protein content of the *overall* ration would still be relatively low. Anyway, it's perfectly fine to feed a 12% grain mix, you usually just don't want to go overboard with feeding high protein hay (like tons of dairy quality alfalfa, etc).
