Re: [RC] Laminitis Supplement Suggestions - kstandeferShould have replied all. Sorry. Cushings deals with the pituitary gland which regulates the thyroid gland. So, typically cushings horse's thyroids are not functioning properly. As I understand it Cushings is usually caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland. The only reason that the Cushings group can help with IR horses (which do not necessarily have any thyroid malfunction, but do have a resistance to processing insulin properly) is because typically Cushings horses are also Insulin Resistant so the diet is the same. There are some really knowledgeable people on that site with regard to diet. They'll help you get the mineral content of your horse's diet straightened out, tell you the best tests to do to test for IR, etc. Another commonality between IR horses and Cushings horses is that they frequently have chronic lamintis caused by their inability to process insulin. So, you'll get lots of information about laminitis/founder from that board as well.
