RE: [RC] Auburn - Rae CallawayYup, Jones Forest is definitely a popular place - trails are about 7+ miles all around. That and Somerville are the only places to ride during Hunting season and still get *some* mileage. You can still go during the week, just call the park service and make a reservation. --- Rae --- tallcarabians@xxxxxxxxxxxxx --- Tall C Arabians - SE Texas [Original Message] From: <Stephanie_D_Adair@xxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: 2/28/2003 12:40:40 PM Subject: [RC] Auburn There seem to be a million ways we can lose our trails; public lands, private lands, National Forest red-tape, development, it goes on and on. But look what I've attached. Can you believe THIS? Living in the suburbs requires us to have to haul to nearby places for an enjoyable ride. "Jones Park" as we call it is a very popular place with local riders, lots of beautiful marked trails. It's sometimes so crowded with rigs on the weekends there is no place to park. Well, NOW it's a weekend park only. Can you believe the reason we've lost it during the week??? I'm ill. Jones State Forest Closed Because Of Illicit Sex Posted: 10:24 a.m. CST February 27, 2003 CONROE, Texas -- Mounting complaints about homosexual trysts at W.G. Jones State Forest have prompted the Texas Forest Service to close the 1,725-acre reserve on weekdays. The Houston-area park, which until last year had been closed on weekdays for several years because of the same problem, has returned to that status again, except by reservation. It remains open on weekends, when it is busy with families from Montgomery County. Jim Hull, the Forest Service's director in College Station, told The Courier he took "swift action" after the newspaper passed along a litany of reader complaints about the park. Hull said his agency doesn't have the personnel to patrol regularly. "It is so disgusting to have to close the facility from hundreds of kids and families for something like this," Hull said. The forest, acquired by the state in 1926, is named for Texas Forestry Association founder W. Goodrich Jones. It is stocked with native loblolly pine and various hardwoods, and is one of two state forests that hosts the endangered red cockaded woodpecker. It is located on Farm-to-Market Road 1488, just south of Conroe. Copyright 2003 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
