Regarding Mary's mention of the horse "collector". Animal "collectors" are
not the animal saviors they profess to be. All too often the animals they
collect are neglected and live in squalor. We should not distance
ourselves too much from these people but rather maintain an observant eye.
If things appear to be deteriorating then someone should be notified - usually a
local vet can refer. How can any responsible person turn a blind eye to
neglect?
My reason for
saying this, a few years ago in my area a horse was placed at a farm under
"rough board". Apparently the owner did not come regularly, did not keep
up the feed supply and left the horse in a small field. By mid winter the
horse had eaten the fencing for lack of food & was
starving. Neither the property owner or other boarders did
anything to correct this. When the horse went down, a vet was
called. At that point there was no saving the horse & it was put
down.
