Re: [Fwd: [RC] ATHLETE defined] and going to the olympics. - Charles
I never considered NASCAR as an Olympic Sport, but
you are right, they could make an argument they are a sport and the drivers are
athletes, especially by my definition of athlete.
Years ago, when I was tons younger and knew even
less about horses than the little I know now, I met an Olympic athlete. He
played squash or racquetball for the Luxemburg national team at the Olympics in
Los Angeles. A couple of years ago I read about Mexico having a team
of one person at a recent winters Olympics.
Near as I can tell, the secret to going is:
Represent a small country with it's limited pool of athletes, or perform a sport
that nobody else in your country performs. One of the problems with the US
is that we have so many people, that it's almost impossible to find a sport that
some group isn't already doing here.
Personally, I don't follow the Olympics much
anymore. Something about the end of the cold war has sapped my
interest. It's either that, or the TV coverage I've seen or haven't
seen.

PS: I like the twirly things, it's nice to see some
form of gymnastics that doesn't require being young and tiny.
Yes, these are indeed nice, pretty, and very true words with which I
totally agree.
However, my original contention was, and still is, that equine sports do
NOT belong in the Olympics because the Olympics are for human athletes.
I suppose one equine sport, like chariot racing, was ok. Now, we've gone
overboard. IMHO, it's not just the equine sports that don't
belong. There's others and I'm absolutely horrified that I wasn't
consulted first! Suppose
NASCAR will want to be an Olympic sport one day?
Having said that, I would LOVE to be an Olympian. Unfortunately, the
only sports I'm involved with are Tae Kwon Do (an Olympic sport), and several
equine disciplines. I did the TKD thing in college and made it quite far
on the road to the Olympics...till I broke my ribs and back. Oh well...
