[RC] Deaths, post mortem exam and disposal - Laura HayesSusan Y C wrote: If, God forbid, my beloved horse died at a ride, I'm SURE I'd want to know why. So, how much does an autopsy cost? How much for "disposal"? I know I too would want to know the cause of death, and I also am sure that my husband would not charge more than $50 to do a post mortem exam, there is too, the cost of lab tests should the cause not be obvious. Also, I know in this area it is illegal to just leave a body of an animal where it falls, or even in a secluded area. The county Health Department does not allow that and there is a minimum depth at which they must be buried, or hauled away by the rendering works, which costs around $50 I think. I was the manager of the Winemaker 50 in NY state in 1986 and a man blatantly rode his horse to death. 98 degrees, 99 percent humidity, 1986 PR requirements, and a stupid idiot all combined to cause the death of a really nice young horse. They packed up and left me with a dead horse in a public campground. It took me years to even talk about it, and I still don't like to. It is the only death I have encountered in 22 years of endurance riding. I hope it never happens again.
