I'm hoping this trend does not catch on.  I don't like it.  I feel like
I'm
suffering for the mistakes of some over zealous FEI riders.  But, I do
appreciate the fact that Dane does think "outside the box" and tries new
things after something like what happened at the WEG occurs.

Actually, while I agree with Dane here, I don't think he is thinking
"outside the box"--one of the big concerns about the WEG in Spain going in
was that there were not enough vet checks.  The fact that the horses paid
the price helped to underscore that the prevailing wisdom was likely right
on the mark.  Many 100's have at least 7 checks during the ride, so since
you're counting the post-ride, that's at least 8 checks.  And it seems to
work best if at least three of those checks have holds of some duration--at
least 45 minutes.
