Re: [RC] 'too slow can cause problems' (Jim) - LindaA good example of this was the Big South Fork ride this year... The vets told everyone after the first days ride " Make good time in the morning and get the ride over with, the horses we are seeing problems with are the ones that are out there in the heat of the day!" Three of our friends rode drag, and I felt much worse for their horses (and mule) being out there all day than ours that were back in camp by about 2:00. Linda Best I understand it is that a "comfortable" pace for you andyour horse, which you determine by training and experience is better for you and your horse, than to be OVERLY cautious at rides. Everything in moderation. However, I don't think there's any danger of horses DYING from going too slow! <grin> Sorry I can't give you more info. I've never been accused of going too slow! :) Regards, JimCouldn't a horse that just plain refuses to drink on the trail, either out of streams or troughs (waits until back in camp), be more at risk for being kept longer out on a ride on a hot day? I know, not a good candidate anyway......Also.....if you have a ride that is very cool in the moring (fog, perhaps), but that then burns off and day gets very, very hot, lets throw in some steep climbs in the sun. Might it not be better for the horse to "make some time" and not dawdle in the morning, and not drag things out all day?
