[RC] re: Powerwalk question - Teresa Van HoveI thought this was an interesting question but saw no replies in the archives so: "Karla Watson" <karla@xxxxxxxx> wrote on Wed, 5 Feb 2003 My horse does have a very fast walk. I call it a "power walk." I ride by myself sometimes with a loose rein and "power walk" 10-12 miles with no trotting. Does this also help condition him as well or should I be trotting also? Would this be considered LSD or should I slow down more when doing that? We really work up a sweat and he really likes these power walks all by ourselves. 1st a good strong walk as you describe sounds like great LSD to me. 2nd: You should be able to put your horse into a relaxed walk at times. They aren't really getting rested if they are pushing themselves in a power walk (if you have a HRM you can check this out, a restful walk on level ground should give a rate in the 80's I think ) If a powerwalk has HR as high as an easy trot its using different muscles, but not really resting the horse, MOYMMV. 3rd: Sounds like you've been doing this for some time; adding in some trotting would probably be an excellent addition to your horse's conditioning. You want him to be able to use all his gaits efficiently and he wont develop an efficient trot if you don't practice it some. Later on you'll want to add in some cantering as well if you have decent canter footing.
