AERC Horse Deaths (Was Re: [RC] [DR] Board Meeting) - Jim HollandBob... So are you suprised? I'm not. The lack of communication between the AERC BOD and it's membership is appalling. After a spirited on-line discussion regarding 2002 horse deaths, in which you participated, I sent the following note to AERC. Note the date. ******************************************************************************** Subject: 2002 Horse Deaths Date: Fri, 11 Oct 2002 20:55:01 -0400 From: Jim Holland <lanconn@xxxxxxx> To: aerc@xxxxxxxxxxxx CC: Randy H Eiland <renegade12@xxxxxxxx>, Bob Morris <bobmorris@xxxxxxxx>, Truman Prevatte <tprevatt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Richard T. "Jim" Holland Three Creeks Farm 175 Hells Hollow Drive Blue Ridge, GA 30513 (706) 258-2830 FAX (706) 632-1271 Please send me (either electronically or regular mail) ALL information available on equine deaths at AERC sanctioned Endurance Rides for the year 2002. Information should include, but not be limited to, the AERC BOD Veterinary Committee Report. Please include the name of the sanctioned ride at which the equine death occurred. If the above requested information exists but is not available to AERC members, please attach documentation explaining why the information is not available. Please include any action taken by the BOD against any individual involved in an equine fatality at an AERC sanctioned Endurance Ride. Thank you... Regards, Jim AERC 4074 ******************************************************************************** I not only did not receive any information, I didn't receive a reply of ANY kind, online or otherwise. Undeterred, on January 3rd, I sent the following letter to Kathleen Henkel with a copy to the Executive Committee: ******************************************************************************* January 3, 2003 Ms. Kathleen Henkel American Endurance Ride Conference P.O. Box 6027 Auburn CA 95604-6027 Kathleen: On October 11, 2002, I emailed the enclosed message to AERC requesting information regarding horse deaths in 2002. I have not received any information, or an acknowledgement of my request. I am assuming this is an oversight. Please let me know the status of my request as soon as possible. Thank you. Regards, Jim . cc AERC Executive Committee . Enc EMAIL of 11 October 2002 from lanconn@xxxxxxx to aerc@xxxxxxxxxxxx *************************************************************************** It has been over a month. I have STILL received NO communication of any kind regarding my request. Last fall, Randy Eiland asked me if if was "implying that horse deaths are just swept under the rug" by AERC. He also assured me that Vet Committee information was readily available. All I had to do submit a request to AERC. No, Randy....I'm not "IMPLYING"...the evidence speaks for itself. It's interesting that there was lots of fallout over the two horse deaths at WEG. AERC vets were involved and made recommendations, and everyone was shocked. Changes were made to hopefully make sure it never happens again. At least those horses did not die in vain. However, at least EIGHT...EIGHT!...horses died in AERC in 2002. The BOD has released NO information regarding the circumstances surrounding those deaths and what actions, if any, were taken. And this is supposed to be an "open meeting" organization? I am disappointed and somewhat embarrassed that our SE Region Directors, who are both on the Vet Committee, have remained totally silent on this issue, although they both have had numerous opportunities to address it. However, not to worry. The BOD is going to get another chance to explain why this information is not available to the membership and why a request from a member is ignored, both by AERC and the SE Regional Directors...and the forum will be a little more public. If you're interested and are attending the Conference, you might want to attend the Open Forum on Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30. If not, then stay tuned. Film at eleven. If you care about the future of Endurance, then it's time you DID get involved. WHO SPEAKS FOR THE HORSES??? Jim, Sun of Dimanche, and Mahada Magic Bob Morris wrote: Just one month until the Board meets in Chattanooga! Has any one heard of an agenda for the meeting? How can we advise our Directors unless we know what is to be discussed? About a month ago I sent a resolution to the entire Board. I had responses from two Directors and one Director elect. Is this how the membership is kept informed or is it that there is no need for the Directors to acknowledge a members concern. I know that when I write or phone to one of my Congressmen I at least get an acknowledgement of my contact. Here, in the AERC, is a big void.
