Re: [RC] Gaited horses 'artificial' gaits - LindaBecause I hadn't looked at this CD in a few years I thought I would look at it again to see what the author had to say about "natural" and "artificial" gaits. There is no speaking in this CD and the only sound is of hooves, so that you learn to hear the gait as well as see the footfall pattern. However, as your reading the different sections her definition of natural was "those patterns of footfalls that are inborn in the majority of horses". And her definition of artificial gaits were "those patterns of footfalls that are not inborn in the majority of horses". The key word being majority. I guess it's just the word "artificial" that is upsetting. If you can overlook that, it's a very good resource. But I agree fully that horses can be naturally gaited, my little spotted filly racked across the stall at 2 days old too. Linda "but I would question the accuracy of an author who lists all the soft and lateral gaits as "artificial" What a hoot! My unregistered TWH/Racking gelding was trained by a non-gaited horse trainer (fprmer arab trainer) as a pleasure horses, never had any special trimming, shoeing, devises or training. At liberty he trots, paces, running-walks, caters, cross-canters (does that under saddle too, unfortunately), and some undefineable variations on all of the above...Never mind the fact that young foals often exhibit their gaitedness right from birth....
