Re: [RC] [RC] TWH training - Truman Prevatt

In Bob Womac's book, Echo of Hoofbeats," he talks about the great TWH's of history competing in both TWH classes and
saddlehorse ( forerunner to saddlebreds ) classes both three and five gaited. It was reported that Roan Allen was a 7 gaited horse! Midnight Sun would enter the showring in the saddlehorse classes and turn around and come back in as a walking horse.

If the folks that developed the breed didn't have a problem with multigaited horses - why should we?  If you let them trot it will not destory the gait. If they are naturally gaited - they are naturally giated. If they are not they won't gait correctly no matter what you do, what kind or shoes up put on them, how you trim their feet, what bit you use, where you sit in the saddle, what saddle you use, etc.

To get them to gait you want to have them carry ther back slightly rounded to flat with the head a bit higher than what you would see in a trot. If they got it they got it.

Like Tina I pick the speed ( at least in theory I pick the speed ) and the horse figures out what to do with his feet. Jon Warren told me one time that a gaited horse that would trot did much better in distance riding than those that didn't. He should know.

Hi Mary, maybe Truman or Maryben will chime in as they have many more miles on a gaited horse than I do.

I have a WH who trots about 80% of the time. Since I didn't start life as a gaited person :) I let him do whatever gait he chooses - I pick the speed. Well I try to pick the speed :) So we trot, rack, pace, and do various and sundry other gaits as we go down the trail. I've been riding him for about 2 years - have done 1 50 on him last year and plan to do some CTRs and 50s on him this year.

Unless you specifically don't want to post (and I do like to post - gives me somthing to do <g>) and/or don't mind letting your gaited horse trot (a serious crime to some) then let him do the gaits he feels most comfortable doing to cover the miles.
