Sorry, but the answer becomes the stock "IT
ALL DEPENDS" A very stable answer to any equine question.
It depends on the way the horse is
maintained, it depends on the way the horse is trained, it depends on the way
the horse is conditioned, it depends on the way the horse is fed, it depends on
the condition of the trail, it depends on the weather, it depends on the ability
of the rider, it depends on the ability of the horse and it all depends on the
luck of the day.
No matter what you do with a horse "IT ALL
DEPENDS"
Sorry but there is no positive answer that
will fit every instance.

Kills...so how fast is too fast?
I'm bringing along a young horse. He is 7 years old, with two years
of dressage training,,,lots of dresage training. Minimal trail
experience, but so far he has done 3 NATRC rides...the LD version at that).
Sooo...How fast would y'all recommend that we do our first 50...which is
coming up this season? I see alot of experienced people starting young
horses at FAST speeds (5 hour 50s) and yet these same experienced people are
telling the rest of us that speed will kill our horses. Its confusing to
me and I've been riding endurance for a few years, I can't imagine how the
other newbies feel!
So PLEASE...at what speed does speed kill? If anybody has the exact
formula....the Duck!?.....can you clue us in? I'd consider riding a
new/green horse in 5 hour 50 milers as potentially deadly......Less deadly
with an experienced rider or a vet riding them, surely that's the case.
BUT how on earth can somebody preach long slow distance when they
are finishing 50 milers on a young horse in 5 hours...It just
doesn't compute. Tell me what I'm missing.....I'm sure you will
